Narrative:

We landed in mdw but our gate was occupied. We waited about 20 minutes; and finally got assigned a new gate. We shut down the #2 engine while we waited; per the fom. We taxied to the gate and stopped at the top of the j-line because there was no one to park us. We waited about 10 minutes until a ramp agent showed up to park us. I attempted to taxi into the gate; but when I pushed up the power on the #1 engine; the differential thrust coupled with the slick ramp area due to de-ice fluid caused the aircraft to begin sliding to the right. No amount of nose wheel steering could compensate for it; even at minimal thrust setting. We were dangerously close to sliding into ground equipment off to the right of the gate area. We had to stop the aircraft; set the parking brake; start the APU; and then start the #2 engine. Using differential thrust from the #2 engine; we were able to get the aircraft moving back to the left and down the j-line into parking.
