Narrative:
Aircraft X pilot initiated go-around at about a 2-3 mile final unable to contact the tower. On position relief I plugged in handset for midnight operations and did not select the loudspeakers on the etvs (enhanced terminal voice switch). The aircraft's first attempted contact; just after the position relief briefing; was completed but was not heard due to the loudspeaker not being turned on. I was picking up the handset to see if aircraft X had forgotten to check in when the A90 line began to ring and I noticed that the speaker was not selected and aircraft X had started climbing on the go-around. Conditions were VFR and I instructed aircraft X to join the downwind to follow the air carrier B737 that was on a 7 mile final; aircraft X acknowledged but contacted approach for re-sequencing and landed without further incident. Recommendation; to accomplish the minimum position relief period 5 minutes of overtime is scheduled for the mid controller to pre brief and the evening controller to post brief before having to sign out; this leads to the briefing process feeling rushed; even when all information is passed and understood. I believe this was a factor in forgetting to turn on the speaker.
