Narrative:
Unknown reason for drag chute deployment on descent from FL400 to FL220. Heard a loud pop --had no idea why! Pressure okay; engines okay -- continued on to destination. After landing drag chute was missing. It was an apparent mechanical up latch failure. Owner will not reinstall drag chute. FAA change items 337 will be followed. In the many years of flying learjets have only used them for demonstration purposes; otherwise they are useless.
