Narrative:

Descending into chattanooga approach gave us a descent to 3000 feet. As the pilot not flying I was getting the new ATIS. After getting the ATIS; I returned to the radio and heard ATC give us a descent to 3000 feet. As the aircraft was approaching 3000 we received an egpws terrain warning. As we leveled it went away. We looked at the chart and saw that the MSA was 3600 feet and the approach for runway 02 was 3000 feet. The tallest object was 1528 feet to the west. We were five miles west of the final downwind for runway 02. As we were looking at this ATC gave us a new altitude of 3600 feet. As we climbed to the new altitude ATC asked us if we were given a clearance to 3000. I said yes and we were handed off to cha tower for the approach. After landing at cha I called chattanooga approach and asked about the altitude we were given. They said; after reviewing the tapes; they found the controller gave us a wrong altitude of 3000 instead of 3600 feet.
