Received an left engine fuel filter EICAS message. Ran appropriate checklist which called for 'land at nearest suitable airport'. Declared emergency when ATC said there would be a delay to fit us into traffic. I felt that it was necessary to land as soon as possible. Uneventful landing.

Title: A B757-200 flight crew diverted to the nearest suitable airport upon receipt of a L ENG FUEL FILTER EICAS message.
Narrative: Received an L ENG FUEL FILTER EICAS message. Ran appropriate checklist which called for 'land at nearest suitable airport'. Declared emergency when ATC said there would be a delay to fit us into traffic. I felt that it was necessary to land ASAP. Uneventful landing.
