Upon initiation of the takeoff roll; engines stabilized at 40% N1; autothrottles (toga) engaged at approximately 60% N1. Left engine stalled and auto-shutdown; 'engine fail' indication displayed. Aborted takeoff at approximately 30-40 knots ground speed; taxied clear of runway; returned to gate; passengers deplaned.

Title: B737 flight crew reports engine failure at about 40 knots during the takeoff roll. After low speed reject the flight returns to the gate.
Narrative: Upon initiation of the takeoff roll; engines stabilized at 40% N1; autothrottles (TOGA) engaged at approximately 60% N1.
