Narrative:

We had been making many minor deviations for buildups that would pop up on the close radar with limited notice. About thirty miles south of galvn intersection on L452 a large cell appeared in short order on the radar in front of us. I immediately called ZNY via commercial radio to get clearance to deviate twenty miles west of course. In the meantime it was apparent that we would have to deviate more and ATC was not getting back to commercial radio for the clearance. Time was of the essence so I declared an emergency to deviate west of course. About the same time ATC got back to us via commercial radio with a clearance to deviate twenty miles left of course. There was much confusion about the direction of deviation since the HF communications were very difficult. The commercial radio operator had thought that we were deviating left of course. I was going west. West sounded like left on the scratchy radio. I gave ZNY our latitude and longitude position and we were then cleared to deviate sixty miles either side of the airway. We then did that and then returned to course.

Title: A B757 Captain; south bound on L452; was unable to obtain clearance to deviate around weather in a timely manor. He used his emergency authority to deviate off the airway. Poor HF communications was cited as a factor.
