Narrative:
Took off with emergency return landing on closed runway. Tower said that runway was closed. I asked if it was due to equipment and men in runway and the tower checked and told us that there was nothing on the runway and cleared us to land.

Title: An MD-80 Flight Crew was notified of smoke in the cabin shortly after takeoff. They turned back to the airport and landed on a closed runway after verifying it was clear of men and equipment.
Narrative: Took off with emergency return landing on closed runway. Tower said that runway was closed. I asked if it was due to equipment and men in runway and the Tower checked and told us that there was nothing on the runway and cleared us to land.
