Narrative:

While slowing for ATC at FL330 the number 1 engine began rapid compressor stalls. Complied with QRH and engine stabilized at idle power. After descending to lower altitude engine operated normally for remainder of flight. No engine exceedances noted. ATC declared emergency for us and a uneventful landing made. Passengers and cabin attendants thoroughly briefed on situation as time permitted. Excellent response by ATC.
