Narrative:
Right engine started O.K. Left engine hung start at 16%; performed abnormal start procedure from QRH. 2nd start O.K. Until starter cut-out @ 45%- manually disengaged starter; abnormal start procedure completed. After approximately an hour into the flight the 'left gen' annunciator light came on. We referred to the single generator failure procedure in the QRH; left gen was reset. 45 minutes later the 'left gen' annunciator light came back on; this time after running the QRH procedure the left gen did not rest. After conferencing with maintenance the decision was made to proceed to destination. At top of descent; weather at destination was reported VFR. Closer in weather was reported at 2800 RVR. On the downwind vector; we received WX update from approach control; now 1800 RVR. On final approach; fully configured; at 1600 ft and GS intercept; left engine failed. Decision was made immediately to go missed approach. We declared an emergency and requested a climb and vectors to nearest suitable airport. Approach briefed us as we climbed to 3000 ft and retracted gear and flaps. At 3000 ft and under radar vectors we performed precautionary engine shutdown procedure; followed by single engine landing checklist. We were vectored to an ILS final approach course at diversion airport and landed.
