Narrative:
During taxi out; the 'speed trim fail' light illuminated during recall and extinguished with reset. I followed a decade plus of 737 training where any caution light that illuminates only during recall and extinguishes with reset was legal to depart. Flight crew placarded in the air. Unfortunately that is no longer true for at least this one item -- a subtle change to MEL/ops manual wording. Complacency is not an excuse and I shall not use it here. I have no excuse -- beyond my 'B.south.' performance. In the future I shall park the aircraft; pull out the MEL and slowly work my way through any issue.

Title: A B737-800's MACH TRIM and SPEED TRIM fail lights illuminated during the before takeoff RECALL check. The lights reset and the Captain erroneously assumed based on past experience that the reset cleared the faults and so the aircraft was legal to depart.
Narrative: During taxi out; the 'Speed Trim Fail' light illuminated during RECALL and extinguished with RESET. I FOLLOWED A DECADE PLUS OF 737 training where any caution light that illuminates only during RECALL and extinguishes with RESET was legal to depart. Flight crew placarded in the air. Unfortunately that is no longer true for at least this one item -- a subtle change to MEL/Ops Manual wording. Complacency is not an excuse and I shall not use it here.
