Narrative:
While being vectored for approach to runway 9R, ATC directed aircraft through final runway 9R at 3500' heading 360 degrees into the path of medium large transport on approach to runway 8L at 4000' heading 090 degrees. Captain took evasive action by turning and descending. Supplemental information from acn 88871: many thanks to controller on our runway for call to maintain above 4000'. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: a follow up telephone call was made to approach control by the captain of medium large transport X. The TRACON supervisor stated that the runway 9 controller had forgotten about medium large transport X long enough for the aircraft to pass through the 2 runway 9 final approach courses and also through the 2 runway 8 final approach courses. Luckily the WX was good and the controller for the runway 8 complex alerted medium large transport Y about the overshoot and told the flight to maintain 4000'. This may not have been needed to prevent a midair collision, but it certainly provided more space between the 2 aircraft than would have existed if the see and avoid concept was the only sep device used.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MLG X VECTORED THROUGH THE FINAL APCH COURSES FOR BOTH RWY COMPLEXES AT ATL AND INTO CONFLICT WITH MLG Y.
Narrative: WHILE BEING VECTORED FOR APCH TO RWY 9R, ATC DIRECTED ACFT THROUGH FINAL RWY 9R AT 3500' HDG 360 DEGS INTO THE PATH OF MLG ON APCH TO RWY 8L AT 4000' HDG 090 DEGS. CAPT TOOK EVASIVE ACTION BY TURNING AND DSNDING. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 88871: MANY THANKS TO CTLR ON OUR RWY FOR CALL TO MAINTAIN ABOVE 4000'. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: A FOLLOW UP TELEPHONE CALL WAS MADE TO APCH CTL BY THE CAPT OF MLG X. THE TRACON SUPVR STATED THAT THE RWY 9 CTLR HAD FORGOTTEN ABOUT MLG X LONG ENOUGH FOR THE ACFT TO PASS THROUGH THE 2 RWY 9 FINAL APCH COURSES AND ALSO THROUGH THE 2 RWY 8 FINAL APCH COURSES. LUCKILY THE WX WAS GOOD AND THE CTLR FOR THE RWY 8 COMPLEX ALERTED MLG Y ABOUT THE OVERSHOOT AND TOLD THE FLT TO MAINTAIN 4000'. THIS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN NEEDED TO PREVENT A MIDAIR COLLISION, BUT IT CERTAINLY PROVIDED MORE SPACE BTWN THE 2 ACFT THAN WOULD HAVE EXISTED IF THE SEE AND AVOID CONCEPT WAS THE ONLY SEP DEVICE USED.
