Narrative:
While departing in a high performance bi-plane, I called on unicom, 'departing on runway 31.' while climbing steeply (normal climb greater than 3000 FPM) at approximately 700', I saw traffic passing overhead across the field, apparently crossing over to enter the traffic pattern. This situation occurred twice during this weekend fly-in. I had to immediately level off the aircraft to prevent a possible collision. I have since revised my departure procedure to now include a shallowing out of my climb temporarily at about 500' AGL to look for traffic before continuing a normal climb after the area has been cleared. I think other pilots planning to cross over the airport may hear my departure call, but are not expecting my aircraft to reach 800-1000' AGL by midfield. Therefore they are not looking for me. Additional traffic clearing should be done also in the area of fly-INS.

Title: ACCELERATED CLIMB ON TKOF AT UNCONTROLLED ARPT. TRAFFIC CONFLICT.
Narrative: WHILE DEPARTING IN A HIGH PERFORMANCE BI-PLANE, I CALLED ON UNICOM, 'DEPARTING ON RWY 31.' WHILE CLBING STEEPLY (NORMAL CLB GREATER THAN 3000 FPM) AT APPROX 700', I SAW TFC PASSING OVERHEAD ACROSS THE FIELD, APPARENTLY XING OVER TO ENTER THE TFC PATTERN. THIS SITUATION OCCURRED TWICE DURING THIS WEEKEND FLY-IN. I HAD TO IMMEDIATELY LEVEL OFF THE ACFT TO PREVENT A POSSIBLE COLLISION. I HAVE SINCE REVISED MY DEP PROC TO NOW INCLUDE A SHALLOWING OUT OF MY CLB TEMPORARILY AT ABOUT 500' AGL TO LOOK FOR TFC BEFORE CONTINUING A NORMAL CLB AFTER THE AREA HAS BEEN CLRED. I THINK OTHER PLTS PLANNING TO CROSS OVER THE ARPT MAY HEAR MY DEP CALL, BUT ARE NOT EXPECTING MY ACFT TO REACH 800-1000' AGL BY MIDFIELD. THEREFORE THEY ARE NOT LOOKING FOR ME. ADDITIONAL TFC CLRING SHOULD BE DONE ALSO IN THE AREA OF FLY-INS.
