Narrative:
We received our clearance on the ramp and were given a 'hold for release'. Upon reaching the runway and after our system checks were complete the captain asked that I make an announcement on CTAF and prepare for departure. After departing the traffic pattern we contacted TRACON approach and were given a phone # to call when we got on the ground. When asked why; TRACON said that we were given a hold for release and did not contact them prior to departure. After arriving at our destination the captain called TRACON and was told that if ATC wanted to follow up that they would contact him. Even though the weather was VFR with a clear sky; we should have called TRACON and told them that we either were going to take off VFR or gotten a release time before departure. Lack of communication with TRACON was problem on our end.
