Narrative:

One hour into my flight while at FL230 I noticed a strong smell of smoke. I also noticed my EFIS was powering down and back up. I also believe there was one brief puff of smoke. I declared an emergency and diverted to the nearest airport. I made a rapid descent (5000-6000 FPM). During the descent; and normal depressurization; the smoke and smell of smoke cleared. The EFIS also started operating properly. Once on the ground I notified ATC I was fine and was met by fire rescue. No evidence of the event was found however I left the plane there to be checked by certified personnel. No other actions taken by me.
