Narrative:
Student was on the landing rollout and over-corrected to the right; resulting in a drift off of the runway. The piper PA-28-140 is not equipped with toe brakes on either side; I took control of the aircraft and attempted to 'jump' a small area of debris beside the runway with what little flying speed remained. The aircraft's propeller missed the debris; but the aft underside of the empennage hit said debris; resulting in minor damage. No other property or persons were injured. After making sure the aircraft was still airworthy it was flown back to its home base for maintenance.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PA28 Flight Instructor reports student over correcting during landing roll. Instructor is unable to prevent the aircraft from departing the runway due to lack of toe brakes. Minor damage to empennage is noted before aircraft is flown back to home base for repairs.
