Narrative:
[We were on] takeoff from zggg at 615;000 pounds on runway 02R on the lmn 9Y RNAV SID. Our performance computer has cleanup altitude at 1050 ft. I was the relief pilot sitting in the observer's seat. Captain briefed leaving the slats out during the turn to 082 degrees. The first officer asked for a high speed climb and it was approved. Aircraft was in IMC conditions during the departure. Altimeter was 1009 hp. Turning to 082 degrees; accelerating through 250 KTS at 3000 ft MSL received a GPWS warning of 'terrain; terrain; pull up'. Captain was hand flying pushed the power up and leveled the wings and raised the nose to 20 degrees. Radio altimeter showed 1200 ft above the ground and then disappeared during the CFIT maneuver. Both pilots were in weather mode on the radar and the pop up terrain feature showed no terrain color in front of the aircraft. Lessons learned: (1) 1000 cleanup should be changed to 3000 cleanup for north departures in guangzhou. (2) high speed departure contributed to GPWS warning. Speed restriction on the departure page of 205 KTS during turns will not allow for a 1000 foot cleanup at heavy gross weights. (3) leaving slats out in the turn aided in the CFIT maneuver. (4) while I had my charts immediately available; I did not have a copy of the SID out; as I usually do. I was looking over the first officer's shoulder and noted the speed restriction and course; but I did not support the crew with terrain awareness.
