Narrative:
Small transport X sts-sfo was en route to land sfo cleared to descend from 5000' to 4000' 'left downwind for 28's'. Bay approach asked if we (copilot was flying) had a widebody transport in sight 10 O'clock for 28L. A widebody transport was in sight. Bay then asked if we had an 'airline' aircraft insight. He was for 28R. We also had a second aircraft (a widebody transport) at 11:30 insight. Bay cleared us for the visual to 'pair with `airline'.' he also said square base. Small transport X turned from 110 degree to northbound to square base. At this time bay asked if we saw the widebody transport. Small transport X had the widebody transport now 12 O'clock and 3 miles in sight 'this was the `airline' aircraft to pair with.' we thought! Bay then said we were to pair with `airline' large transport. (Which was behind the second widebody transport on approach). We then flew a heading as assigned 090 degree then he asked what we were doing. Then assigned heading left 280 degree descend to 2000'. We complied bay switched us to tower 120.5. Tower cleared us to land 28R.

Title: ACR SMT RESEQUENCED AFTER MISUNDERSTANDING CAUSED ACFT TO TURN IN EARLY TO PAIR WITH THE WRONG ACFT.
Narrative: SMT X STS-SFO WAS ENRTE TO LAND SFO CLRED TO DSND FROM 5000' TO 4000' 'LEFT DOWNWIND FOR 28'S'. BAY APCH ASKED IF WE (COPLT WAS FLYING) HAD A WDB IN SIGHT 10 O'CLOCK FOR 28L. A WDB WAS IN SIGHT. BAY THEN ASKED IF WE HAD AN 'AIRLINE' ACFT INSIGHT. HE WAS FOR 28R. WE ALSO HAD A SECOND ACFT (A WDB) AT 11:30 INSIGHT. BAY CLRED US FOR THE VISUAL TO 'PAIR WITH `AIRLINE'.' HE ALSO SAID SQUARE BASE. SMT X TURNED FROM 110 DEG TO NBOUND TO SQUARE BASE. AT THIS TIME BAY ASKED IF WE SAW THE WDB. SMT X HAD THE WDB NOW 12 O'CLOCK AND 3 MILES IN SIGHT 'THIS WAS THE `AIRLINE' ACFT TO PAIR WITH.' WE THOUGHT! BAY THEN SAID WE WERE TO PAIR WITH `AIRLINE' LGT. (WHICH WAS BEHIND THE SECOND WDB ON APCH). WE THEN FLEW A HDG AS ASSIGNED 090 DEG THEN HE ASKED WHAT WE WERE DOING. THEN ASSIGNED HDG LEFT 280 DEG DSND TO 2000'. WE COMPLIED BAY SWITCHED US TO TWR 120.5. TWR CLRED US TO LAND 28R.
