Narrative:
On descent into slc on the localizer for runway 34L, 14 DME from slc VORTAC, I was the PF. Through approximately 9500' MSL I spotted something about 200' below heading south. I pulled our aircraft up and to the right and missed object. I couldn't tell if it was an aircraft or a balloon, but it was dark blue in color, and bigger than a basketball and smaller than an small aircraft. The captain advised ATC that we had a near miss and controller said he hadn't seen any traffic to report. Supplemental information from acn 91272: copilot and I simultaneously saw what appeared to be a drop military style tank or a missile. Object appeared to be 2-TONE blue, bullet shaped, with 1 winglet extending from each side. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: did not reveal any further insight about what the unk object was. The first officer did say that he thought it was a balloon, but could not be sure. The incident occurred over south slc airport, but reporter did not know of any activity at the airport that would be connected with their sighting.

Title: CLOSE PROX ACR-LTT UNK-OBJECT WHILE ON APCH TO SLC.
Narrative: ON DSCNT INTO SLC ON THE LOC FOR RWY 34L, 14 DME FROM SLC VORTAC, I WAS THE PF. THROUGH APPROX 9500' MSL I SPOTTED SOMETHING ABOUT 200' BELOW HDG S. I PULLED OUR ACFT UP AND TO THE RIGHT AND MISSED OBJECT. I COULDN'T TELL IF IT WAS AN ACFT OR A BALLOON, BUT IT WAS DARK BLUE IN COLOR, AND BIGGER THAN A BASKETBALL AND SMALLER THAN AN SMA. THE CAPT ADVISED ATC THAT WE HAD A NEAR MISS AND CTLR SAID HE HADN'T SEEN ANY TFC TO RPT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 91272: COPLT AND I SIMULTANEOUSLY SAW WHAT APPEARED TO BE A DROP MIL STYLE TANK OR A MISSILE. OBJECT APPEARED TO BE 2-TONE BLUE, BULLET SHAPED, WITH 1 WINGLET EXTENDING FROM EACH SIDE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: DID NOT REVEAL ANY FURTHER INSIGHT ABOUT WHAT THE UNK OBJECT WAS. THE F/O DID SAY THAT HE THOUGHT IT WAS A BALLOON, BUT COULD NOT BE SURE. THE INCIDENT OCCURRED OVER SOUTH SLC ARPT, BUT RPTR DID NOT KNOW OF ANY ACTIVITY AT THE ARPT THAT WOULD BE CONNECTED WITH THEIR SIGHTING.
