Narrative:
Clearance to maintain runway heading vectors to 092 of mfd maintain 4000'. After takeoff we were cleared to turn left to 260 degrees, intercept 092 of mfd on course and climb and maintain 10000' which I read back. At 9000' on a 260 degree heading and 250 KTS departure said, 'you were only cleared to 8000', turn left to 230 degrees, and descend immediately to 8000',' which we did, and I replied. I read back 10000'. Departure control discovered the problem. We turned left and descended to 8000'. There was no severe evasive action. Communication breakdown on the readback.
