Narrative:
Transfer gear box plate removed and was not reinstalled prior to flight. No written procedure existed for this operation. Afterwards, a procedure was written. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: the problem was discovered approximately 20 mins after takeoff when engine oil pressure and quantity dropped to zero. Engine shut down and return/land. Reporter said he has been asked by FAA to submit a report. Supplemental information from acn 91406: area hidden by cowling after cowling replaced by another mechanic. Company promptly initiated a written procedure after event.

Title: ACR MLG RETURNED TO SERVICE WITH TRANSFER GEAR BOX COVER PLATE MISSING.
Narrative: TRANSFER GEAR BOX PLATE REMOVED AND WAS NOT REINSTALLED PRIOR TO FLT. NO WRITTEN PROC EXISTED FOR THIS OPERATION. AFTERWARDS, A PROC WAS WRITTEN.
