Narrative:
I contacted approach for radar flight following. I was given an initial squawk code while the controller was attempting to land a flight of 7 or more military aircraft and was quite busy. They did not issue me a radar contact call. I was clear of their charted airspace. I initiated a turn to show a friend a landmark and upon completion of the turn saw an air carrier through the windscreen. I entered a 45 degree bank to avoid [his] flightpath. The jet did not receive a resolution advisory because we are not equipped with a TCAS system but rather tis. Based on his rapid climb and report of maneuvering to avoid traffic I am assuming that we both received the traffic alert simultaneously. Neither I nor the MD80 were issued traffic advisories by approach. I am assuming the controller was removed from the position as I returned to my airport and canceled with a different controller on the same frequency.
