Narrative:
I taxied out for pattern work. My first two takeoff and landings were without incident. Upon landing of 3rd touch and go on the active runway; aircraft bounced and then drifted off of left side of runway approximately 1/4 down runway striking a runway light with left hand main gear strut leading edge of aircraft. Proceeded to taxiway a and called tower. Tower directed me back to FBO and parked. Owner of FBO and I examined aircraft and discovered slight crushing damage on left hand main gear strut leading edge. No other damage evident. Wind at time was announced by tower when turning from downwind to base as 040 at 4 KTS. ATIS reported weather at time of departure was 'information abcd' and was the following: 04008KT 10SM skc 10/3 A3016. When I heard the 'information abcd'; I knew I had limitations on my solo endorsement as follows: 'solo flight in C-172; conditions: must have instructor ok; FBO aircraft only; 3;000 ceiling; 10 KTS total wind; 5 KTS crosswind.' when I thought about the 8 KT wind out of 40 degrees; I estimated total crosswind was less than my limit and headwind was less than my limit; so I continued my preflight preparation and departure for pattern work. I would agree that I need additional dual training time (10.0 hours) in type before attempting further flights with any crosswinds.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A student pilot bounced a C172 during touch and go landings; departed the runway and struck a runway light damaging a strut leading edge slightly. The actual wind was a quartering 4 KTS at the time and his pilot's student certificate had limitations which included a 5 KTS crosswind.

ATIS reported weather at time of departure was 'Information ABCD' and was the following: 04008KT 10SM SKC 10/3 A3016. When I heard the 'Information ABCD'; I knew I had limitations on my solo endorsement as follows: 'solo flight in C-172; conditions: must have instructor OK; FBO aircraft only; 3;000 ceiling; 10 KTS total wind; 5 KTS crosswind.'
