Narrative:
At approximately XA52Z, I was cruising at 11000' and 250 KTS, assigned. Approach cleared us to descend to 5000', heading 260 degrees for vectors to runway 31R ILS at jfk. At approximately XA54Z, approach advised eastbound traffic at 11 O'clock, unverified altitude 9500'. I immediately applied power and climbed from 9600 to 10500'. Approach then cleared us to climb to 10000' and we advised that we were maintaining 10500'. The first officer called traffic at 12 O'clock at about 9500'. A 5 ship formation of MTR's passed under us to the left at less than 1000'. In my judgement, the safest course of action was to initiate a climb. No abrupt maneuvers were required. The MTR's formation took no evasive action. Approach was advised of a near miss. Had the controller not advised us and had we not climbed, a near midair collision might have resulted.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: POTENTIAL CONFLICT AIRBORNE BETWEEN ACR-WDB AND FORMATION OF FIVE FORMER MTR.
Narrative: AT APPROX XA52Z, I WAS CRUISING AT 11000' AND 250 KTS, ASSIGNED. APCH CLRED US TO DSND TO 5000', HDG 260 DEGS FOR VECTORS TO RWY 31R ILS AT JFK. AT APPROX XA54Z, APCH ADVISED EBND TFC AT 11 O'CLOCK, UNVERIFIED ALT 9500'. I IMMEDIATELY APPLIED PWR AND CLBED FROM 9600 TO 10500'. APCH THEN CLRED US TO CLB TO 10000' AND WE ADVISED THAT WE WERE MAINTAINING 10500'. THE F/O CALLED TFC AT 12 O'CLOCK AT ABOUT 9500'. A 5 SHIP FORMATION OF MTR'S PASSED UNDER US TO THE LEFT AT LESS THAN 1000'. IN MY JUDGEMENT, THE SAFEST COURSE OF ACTION WAS TO INITIATE A CLB. NO ABRUPT MANEUVERS WERE REQUIRED. THE MTR'S FORMATION TOOK NO EVASIVE ACTION. APCH WAS ADVISED OF A NEAR MISS. HAD THE CTLR NOT ADVISED US AND HAD WE NOT CLBED, A NMAC MIGHT HAVE RESULTED.
