Narrative:
Attempted to select navigation on takeoff; but FMA went back to takeoff; and perf/navigation unavailable displayed on CDU. Requested vectors; but there was a snag in the hand off from tower to departure. After some initial confusion we were leveled off at 5;000 ft and given a vector. I'm concerned--everything looked fine and we had no warning the FMS was not going to work.
