Narrative:
Vectors over mt. Diablo leveling off at 5;000 ft. MSA is 5;100 ft in this area. Knew where the terrain was; but still received a 'terrain; terrain; pull up' warning from epgws. [We] executed the terrain avoidance maneuver. Climbed up to 5;600 ft and was in VMC at that point. Leveled off and told controller of our actions. Controller cleared us back to 5;000 ft clear of terrain. We descended and landed uneventfully.
