Narrative:
Eastbound small aircraft, mine, cruising VFR at 9500' MSL. Northbound jet airliner. Observed airliner rapidly approaching on right side at 3 O'clock position slightly above, crossed behind small aircraft directly over eon VOR at 9500', estimated closest proximity 2500'. Note: suggest high speed jet traffic be especially vigilant to avoid VFR altitudes (thousands + 500) over vors when climbing or descending in VFR conditions. 10/87 we had a similar encounter which required evasive action over cgt when we met a jet airliner at 6500' MSL nose to nose. No report filed. Recommend: when near concentration of heavy traffic (chicago, atlanta, etc) suggest establish communications with traffic advisory controllers. Keep high speed traffic inside TCA's until above 10000' MSL. In 1987 we sighted numerous airliners as far west of chicago as joliet at the 6000' MSL level. The sky is 3 dimensional. Keep the high speed traffic above 10000', especially arriving aircraft wherein pilots are busy with checklists and the nose is often in a high position obstructing vision.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CLOSE PROX GA-SMA ACR-MLG OVER EON VOR.
Narrative: EBND SMA, MINE, CRUISING VFR AT 9500' MSL. NBOUND JET AIRLINER. OBSERVED AIRLINER RAPIDLY APCHING ON RIGHT SIDE AT 3 O'CLOCK POS SLIGHTLY ABOVE, CROSSED BEHIND SMA DIRECTLY OVER EON VOR AT 9500', ESTIMATED CLOSEST PROX 2500'. NOTE: SUGGEST HIGH SPD JET TFC BE ESPECIALLY VIGILANT TO AVOID VFR ALTS (THOUSANDS + 500) OVER VORS WHEN CLBING OR DSNDING IN VFR CONDITIONS. 10/87 WE HAD A SIMILAR ENCOUNTER WHICH REQUIRED EVASIVE ACTION OVER CGT WHEN WE MET A JET AIRLINER AT 6500' MSL NOSE TO NOSE. NO RPT FILED. RECOMMEND: WHEN NEAR CONCENTRATION OF HVY TFC (CHICAGO, ATLANTA, ETC) SUGGEST ESTABLISH COMS WITH TFC ADVISORY CTLRS. KEEP HIGH SPD TFC INSIDE TCA'S UNTIL ABOVE 10000' MSL. IN 1987 WE SIGHTED NUMEROUS AIRLINERS AS FAR W OF CHICAGO AS JOLIET AT THE 6000' MSL LEVEL. THE SKY IS 3 DIMENSIONAL. KEEP THE HIGH SPD TFC ABOVE 10000', ESPECIALLY ARRIVING ACFT WHEREIN PLTS ARE BUSY WITH CHKLISTS AND THE NOSE IS OFTEN IN A HIGH POS OBSTRUCTING VISION.
