Narrative:

During the arrival into san; we were cleared for the lyndi 2 STAR. During descent to lucki; approach stated; 'cross vydda at or above 4;000 ft and cleared for the approach.' vydda was not on the STAR. This caused confusion on the flight deck because we had not been cleared to vydda. After clarifying with approach; they cleared us off the STAR direct to vydda. Approach should clear to a fix before giving crossing and subsequent routing.

Title: An Approach Controller failed to clear a flight to a fix before giving it a crossing restriction and route clearance beyond the fix.

Narrative: During the arrival into SAN; we were cleared for the LYNDI 2 STAR. During descent to LUCKI; Approach stated; 'Cross VYDDA at or above 4;000 FT and cleared for the approach.' VYDDA was not on the STAR. This caused confusion on the flight deck because we had not been cleared to VYDDA. After clarifying with Approach; they cleared us off the STAR direct to VYDDA.
