Narrative:
On initial climb out passing approximately 6;000 ft the flight attendants chimed the cockpit and reported the smell of smoke along with a slight haze in the rear of the cabin. I told them we would return to the airport and to remain in contact with me on the interphone. First officer was flying the aircraft. I asked the first officer to declare an emergency; request the arff; and return to the airport. I pulled out the QRH and followed the procedure. After approximately 5 minutes the flight attendants reported that the smell of smoke and the haze had completely dissipated. We continued to the airport to land uneventfully and under maximum landing weight. Arff inspected the aircraft on the runway and cleared us. With no other condition existing we returned to the gate with the arff.
