Narrative:
Departed midway with clearance to 3000'. First officer flying. In the first 2 mins of the flight we had to level off at 3000' (mdw elev 619'), clean up aircraft (flaps, gear), keep speed below 200 KTS, change ATC frequencys, navigation around trw cells using WX radar and make 2 heading changes by ATC. As I looked up from radar we had gone through 3400'. The first officer immediately made a correction and we rapidly returned to 3000' assigned altitude. There is no excuse for busting an altitude, but a midway 3 or even worse a canal 3 departure from midway is quite hard to do. Midway airport is getting very busy. Some time in the near future the TCA or a segment of it should include mdw from ground to top of TCA. Taking off in a 90000 pounds medium large transport climbing to less than 1500' AGL (as in canal departure) all the while turning in a 30 degree bank and keep the speed below 200 KTS is very hard. I am not making an excuse for the altitude bust, but factors such as these do make it hard on us.

Title: ACR MLG ALT DEVIATION OVERSHOT DURING SID FROM MDW.
Narrative: DEPARTED MIDWAY WITH CLRNC TO 3000'. F/O FLYING. IN THE FIRST 2 MINS OF THE FLT WE HAD TO LEVEL OFF AT 3000' (MDW ELEV 619'), CLEAN UP ACFT (FLAPS, GEAR), KEEP SPD BELOW 200 KTS, CHANGE ATC FREQS, NAV AROUND TRW CELLS USING WX RADAR AND MAKE 2 HDG CHANGES BY ATC. AS I LOOKED UP FROM RADAR WE HAD GONE THROUGH 3400'. THE F/O IMMEDIATELY MADE A CORRECTION AND WE RAPIDLY RETURNED TO 3000' ASSIGNED ALT. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR BUSTING AN ALT, BUT A MIDWAY 3 OR EVEN WORSE A CANAL 3 DEP FROM MIDWAY IS QUITE HARD TO DO. MIDWAY ARPT IS GETTING VERY BUSY. SOME TIME IN THE NEAR FUTURE THE TCA OR A SEGMENT OF IT SHOULD INCLUDE MDW FROM GND TO TOP OF TCA. TAKING OFF IN A 90000 LBS MLG CLBING TO LESS THAN 1500' AGL (AS IN CANAL DEP) ALL THE WHILE TURNING IN A 30 DEG BANK AND KEEP THE SPD BELOW 200 KTS IS VERY HARD. I AM NOT MAKING AN EXCUSE FOR THE ALT BUST, BUT FACTORS SUCH AS THESE DO MAKE IT HARD ON US.
