Narrative:

Climbing through 17000' MSL tail compartment temperature warning light illuminated. Requested to level at 17000'. ATC gave 18000'. At that point phase I and phase ii emergency procedures were completed and the warning light remained on. Procedures then dictated that a landing be made as soon as practical. At that point the ATC was 40 mi from bgm. A landing at bgm was requested and granted. Aircraft landed west/O incident and was inspected by emergency vehicles for fire. Passenger deplaned west/O incident. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: reporter states outside inspection showed no fire as crew had also determined, so normal passenger departure. Mechanics were flown in and found 2 problems. Hole in ducting system at heat exchanger. Sensor at heat exchanger activated at 150 degrees although set for 180 degrees. Crew tired all appropriate procedures and none worked.
