Narrative:
Flight dca-iah. Aircraft towed over to gate. During walkaround noticed a dent in the leading edge of the left wing root. The dent was approximately 3' X 3', pressing in about 1/4'. In my opinion it did not deter from safety of flight. Captain was told of dent and my opinion of it. Flew aircraft to iah with no problems. (Looked in logbook for a placard or write up but there was none). At iah I asked maintenance if they knew of the dent. The mechanic looked at the dent, said it was ok to board aircraft and called maintenance control to see if the dent was logged. It was not and a supervisor came out to look at the dent. He then looked up the limits. He returned and said dent was out of limits and aircraft was taken OTS. When actual dent occurred is not known crews could assume that maintenance knew of dent and was deferred. Suggest than any dent be placarded on logbook and a sticker DOT (as I have seen sometimes) be put on dent.

Title: ACR MLG ACCEPTED FOR FLT FROM DCA TO IAH WITH DENT IN LEADING EDGE OF WING.
Narrative: FLT DCA-IAH. ACFT TOWED OVER TO GATE. DURING WALKAROUND NOTICED A DENT IN THE LEADING EDGE OF THE LEFT WING ROOT. THE DENT WAS APPROX 3' X 3', PRESSING IN ABOUT 1/4'. IN MY OPINION IT DID NOT DETER FROM SAFETY OF FLT. CAPT WAS TOLD OF DENT AND MY OPINION OF IT. FLEW ACFT TO IAH WITH NO PROBS. (LOOKED IN LOGBOOK FOR A PLACARD OR WRITE UP BUT THERE WAS NONE). AT IAH I ASKED MAINT IF THEY KNEW OF THE DENT. THE MECH LOOKED AT THE DENT, SAID IT WAS OK TO BOARD ACFT AND CALLED MAINT CTL TO SEE IF THE DENT WAS LOGGED. IT WAS NOT AND A SUPVR CAME OUT TO LOOK AT THE DENT. HE THEN LOOKED UP THE LIMITS. HE RETURNED AND SAID DENT WAS OUT OF LIMITS AND ACFT WAS TAKEN OTS. WHEN ACTUAL DENT OCCURRED IS NOT KNOWN CREWS COULD ASSUME THAT MAINT KNEW OF DENT AND WAS DEFERRED. SUGGEST THAN ANY DENT BE PLACARDED ON LOGBOOK AND A STICKER DOT (AS I HAVE SEEN SOMETIMES) BE PUT ON DENT.
