Narrative:

Altitude select on MCP (10000). In process of changing navigation from heading to intercept so that 'left-navigation' could be placed in operation, departure control called to restate clearance altitude was 10000'. Aircraft was at 10700' climbing and MCP now indicated 11000. Medium large transport have a history of making unselected altitude changes and copilot is positive he made proper selection in altitude window on MCP. We are assuming this was a transient glitch and not just an improperly set altitude. Manual control of aircraft was assumed and aircraft brought back to 10000'. Then climb was issued to 17000'. This is typical of heads down making selections on panel and assuming automated aircraft is doing its own thing properly.
