Narrative:
Shortly after takeoff ECAM indicated 'left/G lgciu 1 fault'. Crew completed all checklists and contacted maintenance control who suggested a reset of 3 circuit breakers (cbs). We reset the cbs but the fault remained. After discussing the situation with dispatch we decided to return to our departure airport. Cabin crew and passengers were briefed.when landing gear was extended; gear indications were not normal. ECAM wheel page indicated one green down triangle for each gear and one set of amber X's for each gear. Gear indication on landing gear panel indicated down and locked for nose and right main. Left main indicated unlocked in red. Although we expected an uneventful landing; I declared an emergency. During approach; the tower reported gear appeared to be extended. A normal landing was accomplished and aircraft was taxied to the gate and I entered discrepancy into the maintenance log.
