Narrative:

Approximately 10 to 15 minutes after reaching cruise altitude (FL320); we received 'display temperature' on co-pilot's pfd. The captain ran the non normal checklist. A few minutes into the checklist we began to have 'display temperature' on all of the other screens except the EICAS 1 display. We declared an emergency and chose a nearby airport as the diversion airport due to VFR conditions on the field. Weather at that airport began to deteriorate and we elected to divert to a slightly more distant airport where the weather was VFR normal landing; no other complications. I received word from the mechanics that cleared our discrepancy that one of the fans that cools draws cool air flow over the displays were placed in back wards. The event was due to a mechanical failure which cannot be eliminated. Our checklist does not allow for switching to the flight altitude fan; which we have a switch on the lower pedestal for.

Title: A CRJ900 cockpit display cooling fan was installed backward causing the 'DISPLAY TEMP' EICAS alert on all but one PFD so an emergency was declared and flight diverted to a nearby VMC airport.
