Narrative:

As we were climbing through 12;000 on our way to our assigned altitude of 17;000 the controller asked us to level off at 16;000. We leveled off at 16;000 and were flying level. After a few minutes the controller called us and asked why we had gone up to 17;000 and back down to 16;000. We responded that we hadn't and had been level at 16;000 the whole time. I then asked the controller what his altimeter setting was; and he said 29.15' which was close to ours of 29.14'. We told him we were still showing level at 16;000. He then handed us off to the next controller; and after calling the new controller saying level at 16;000; he responded that he showed us high. I then asked what altimeter setting he had and he said 29.54'. We put this in and leveled off at 16;000 with the new setting and he said it was showing level at 16;000 now for him. We determined that the pressure was rising rapidly as we were getting further away from the approaching storm which is a big low pressure storm. We continued to our destination and landed safely; with no other big changes in pressure.the controller should have been aware that with a strong low pressure system the pressure would go up when we got further away from it. He should have found us more frequent altimeter settings for appropriate stations as we passed near them.

Title: A CRJ-50 flight crew encountered repeated inquiries regarding their altitude as they traveled away from the eye of a hurricane into increasingly higher atmospheric pressure. Frequent synchronizing of the their altimeter settings with pressures at nearby stations resolved the discrepancies.
