Narrative:
On take-off roll after 80 knot call and checking FMA's for thrust hold and checking our acceleration went back to check the engine instruments and noticed the right engine had an egt exceedence of 979. Elected to continue the takeoff because remember reading abort after 80 kts for engine fire or failure or you believe that the plane won't fly. On climb out disengaged the auto throttles to get the temp down then hit VNAV and temp came out of red. Once cleaned up and getting the plane on autopilot. I got hold of maintenance to let them know what happened. They talked to maintenance control. After giving them the info from the engine exceedence page on EICAS; they wanted us to return which we did. We landed overweight at 333;000 pounds returned to gate with no further issues. More training and discussion in my upcoming pc about aborts. I had a little indecision when I noticed the exceedence.

Title: B767 Captain notices EGT exceedance during takeoff roll above 80 knots and allows the First Officer to continue the takeoff. Once airborne maintenance is apprised of the engine exceedance parameters and the crew is told to return.
