Narrative:
I had received my clearance and had called ground for taxi. I was given word to taxi to runway 9. No statement was made to hold at either 5/23 or 9/27. I taxied very slowly thinking ground control may give me a hold short at 5/23! None was given. I continued on and slowly approached 9/27 on taxiway G. Again no holds were given. The tower was also working commuter traffic on 13/31. I diligently looked for traffic. Shortly after crossing 9/27 at east, and turned west on en, I received a royal tongue-lashing for crossing 9/27 and was informed I was in violation for crossing the runway that would become active to me. I apologized and explained this was not the way I had been trained at ptk where I had been based for the last 12 yrs. On returning to ptk I discussed the situation in detail with tower chief, and also detroit GADO tower executive. Both agreed I had used correct procedure. I am writing not to complain about the mli ground controller but, I say this procedure is not clear and in my 50 yrs of flying and especially in the last 4 yrs, I had similar situations at topeka, ks, dte, mkg and 3 different instances at msp. It is obvious controllers have different opinions about taxi instructions. We sure as hell don't need any tenerife! I fly in and out of dtw and they are very concise. Many times I have been cleared to an active with no holds.

Title: CROSSED RWY WITHOUT CLRNC.
Narrative: I HAD RECEIVED MY CLRNC AND HAD CALLED GND FOR TAXI. I WAS GIVEN WORD TO TAXI TO RWY 9. NO STATEMENT WAS MADE TO HOLD AT EITHER 5/23 OR 9/27. I TAXIED VERY SLOWLY THINKING GND CTL MAY GIVE ME A HOLD SHORT AT 5/23! NONE WAS GIVEN. I CONTINUED ON AND SLOWLY APCHED 9/27 ON TXWY G. AGAIN NO HOLDS WERE GIVEN. THE TWR WAS ALSO WORKING COMMUTER TFC ON 13/31. I DILIGENTLY LOOKED FOR TFC. SHORTLY AFTER XING 9/27 AT E, AND TURNED W ON EN, I RECEIVED A ROYAL TONGUE-LASHING FOR XING 9/27 AND WAS INFORMED I WAS IN VIOLATION FOR XING THE RWY THAT WOULD BECOME ACTIVE TO ME. I APOLOGIZED AND EXPLAINED THIS WAS NOT THE WAY I HAD BEEN TRAINED AT PTK WHERE I HAD BEEN BASED FOR THE LAST 12 YRS. ON RETURNING TO PTK I DISCUSSED THE SITUATION IN DETAIL WITH TWR CHIEF, AND ALSO DETROIT GADO TWR EXECUTIVE. BOTH AGREED I HAD USED CORRECT PROC. I AM WRITING NOT TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE MLI GND CTLR BUT, I SAY THIS PROC IS NOT CLEAR AND IN MY 50 YRS OF FLYING AND ESPECIALLY IN THE LAST 4 YRS, I HAD SIMILAR SITUATIONS AT TOPEKA, KS, DTE, MKG AND 3 DIFFERENT INSTANCES AT MSP. IT IS OBVIOUS CTLRS HAVE DIFFERENT OPINIONS ABOUT TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. WE SURE AS HELL DON'T NEED ANY TENERIFE! I FLY IN AND OUT OF DTW AND THEY ARE VERY CONCISE. MANY TIMES I HAVE BEEN CLRED TO AN ACTIVE WITH NO HOLDS.
