Narrative:

[We were] at about 4;600 ft descending to 4;000 ft. I; pilot not flying; changed the altitude alerter from 4;000 to 3;000 by mistake. I quickly set it back to 4;000 ft as the plane passed through about 4;400 ft. The plane didn't level off at 4;000 ft but continued to descend. We were alert and stopped the descent by 3;800 ft; but don't understand why it wouldn't capture. For most autopilots this wouldn't be a problem. The honeywell epic system in the ce-680; sovereign; is full of gotcha's like this. VNAV drops off; direct to sometimes won't turn to selected point.
