Narrative:
At gear retraction; the right main gear light showed gear unsafe. We followed the abnormal check-list 'gear unsafe light(s) illuminates after gear retraction'. We contacted maintenance control. We were directed to return and we landed uneventfully; below maximum landing weight; and returned to the gate. We were assigned a new aircraft. This was a mechanical issue. Maintenance has not informed me why this occurred.
