Narrative:

I provided instrument services to a client for a biennial flight review. After 40 mins of ground review, we took off from boulder municipal airport in my clients aircraft, an small aircraft X. Upon completing the flight review, we returned to near boulder airport. My client first attempted to contact unicom for an advisory. This was 12 mi northeast. A second request was made for the advisory from 7 mi out. No answer resulted from either call. We observed one aircraft departing crosswind from runway 8, and another aircraft lifting off the runway. We entered a 45 degree right turn to the pattern, abeam the departure end, at 6100' MSL. This is the proper pattern altitude for runway 08. At the 1/2 position, downwind, an aircraft reported 10 east for landing, and asked for an advisory. After a brief pause, my client answered, stating that unicom wasn't talking to anyone, and that we were downwind for 08. Observing no other aircraft, we continued to the 1/4 downwind position from the approach end. Here were heard on the radio the statement, 'some pass job.' we were flying at 90 KTS IAS at this position, and still observed no other aircraft. We turned a short base leg, descended, and heard another aircraft ask an small aircraft Z in the pattern at boulder if he intended to land. No response was returned, and the other aircraft again asked if the small aircraft Z intended to land. The first communication we heard, from a man and his small aircraft Z aircraft was, 'yes, on base, turning final for the active--ah, 0-8, behind the small aircraft X that passed me by 2'. I want to talk to him on the ground.' this was our first thought that we had overtaken another aircraft in the pattern. We landed and taxied to our tie down spot. Soon after, with another friend of ours having walked up, a gentleman came over, obviously very irate, and asked who was flying our plane. My client answered in the affirmative, whereupon this man became very abusive and at times almost incoherent. My client apologized, and I asked if we could talk this incident over rationally. This man continued with most abusive language, threatening to see that my client never flew again, and promptly marched off. We were unable to establish his name or his aircraft #, but feel he is based at the boulder airport. There are at least 2 small aircraft Z single engine aircraft based at this airport. I am a full time ATP corp research pilot and part time instrument pilot. I have the highest regard for the danger associated with midair collisions. Both I and my client understand VFR (see and be seen) rules, and were using 2 pairs of trained eyes to locate other aircraft. Yet, this incident apparently did occur, and that fact disturbs us greatly. As a partial rectification of this apparent incident, I believe this gentleman and his small aircraft Z single engine aircraft should have reported his position somewhere on his downwind pattern, and most definitely answered us, with an in-flight advisory as to his position, and what runway he was intending to land on. This would have given us an area of sky to scan, and allowed us to adjust our airspeed to match his slower ground track. Supplemental information from acn 100437: over ibm I stated my intentions to turn left downwind for 08 at 1v5. A second plane called in 10 mi out for a unicom advisory. I observed an small aircraft Y approaching from the east at our altitude. It was going to pass behind us about a mile. A second plane was observed about 10 mi southeast and was no factor. I called my turn to base, looked for and saw no traffic. I called my turn to final, looked and observed no traffic. A single engine small aircraft Z landed behind us and taxied to the terminal area. While I was tying down the airplane an unidentified man came over to us. He started screaming about me running over him. We said that we did not see him and asked if he had called in on the radio. He said yes, but we did not hear him.

Title: NMAC BETWEEN 2 GA SMA IN TRAFFIC PATTERN AT NON TWR ARPT.

Narrative: I PROVIDED INSTR SVCS TO A CLIENT FOR A BIENNIAL FLT REVIEW. AFTER 40 MINS OF GND REVIEW, WE TOOK OFF FROM BOULDER MUNICIPAL ARPT IN MY CLIENTS ACFT, AN SMA X. UPON COMPLETING THE FLT REVIEW, WE RETURNED TO NEAR BOULDER ARPT. MY CLIENT FIRST ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT UNICOM FOR AN ADVISORY. THIS WAS 12 MI NE. A SECOND REQUEST WAS MADE FOR THE ADVISORY FROM 7 MI OUT. NO ANSWER RESULTED FROM EITHER CALL. WE OBSERVED ONE ACFT DEPARTING XWIND FROM RWY 8, AND ANOTHER ACFT LIFTING OFF THE RWY. WE ENTERED A 45 DEG RIGHT TURN TO THE PATTERN, ABEAM THE DEP END, AT 6100' MSL. THIS IS THE PROPER PATTERN ALT FOR RWY 08. AT THE 1/2 POS, DOWNWIND, AN ACFT RPTED 10 E FOR LNDG, AND ASKED FOR AN ADVISORY. AFTER A BRIEF PAUSE, MY CLIENT ANSWERED, STATING THAT UNICOM WASN'T TALKING TO ANYONE, AND THAT WE WERE DOWNWIND FOR 08. OBSERVING NO OTHER ACFT, WE CONTINUED TO THE 1/4 DOWNWIND POS FROM THE APCH END. HERE WERE HEARD ON THE RADIO THE STATEMENT, 'SOME PASS JOB.' WE WERE FLYING AT 90 KTS IAS AT THIS POS, AND STILL OBSERVED NO OTHER ACFT. WE TURNED A SHORT BASE LEG, DSNDED, AND HEARD ANOTHER ACFT ASK AN SMA Z IN THE PATTERN AT BOULDER IF HE INTENDED TO LAND. NO RESPONSE WAS RETURNED, AND THE OTHER ACFT AGAIN ASKED IF THE SMA Z INTENDED TO LAND. THE FIRST COM WE HEARD, FROM A MAN AND HIS SMA Z ACFT WAS, 'YES, ON BASE, TURNING FINAL FOR THE ACTIVE--AH, 0-8, BEHIND THE SMA X THAT PASSED ME BY 2'. I WANT TO TALK TO HIM ON THE GND.' THIS WAS OUR FIRST THOUGHT THAT WE HAD OVERTAKEN ANOTHER ACFT IN THE PATTERN. WE WERE UNABLE TO ESTABLISH HIS NAME OR HIS ACFT #, BUT FEEL HE IS BASED AT THE BOULDER ARPT. THERE ARE AT LEAST 2 SMA Z SINGLE ENG ACFT BASED AT THIS ARPT. I AM A FULL TIME ATP CORP RESEARCH PLT AND PART TIME INSTR PLT. I HAVE THE HIGHEST REGARD FOR THE DANGER ASSOCIATED WITH MIDAIR COLLISIONS. BOTH I AND MY CLIENT UNDERSTAND VFR (SEE AND BE SEEN) RULES, AND WERE USING 2 PAIRS OF TRAINED EYES TO LOCATE OTHER ACFT. YET, THIS INCIDENT APPARENTLY DID OCCUR, AND THAT FACT DISTURBS US GREATLY. AS A PARTIAL RECTIFICATION OF THIS APPARENT INCIDENT, I BELIEVE THIS GENTLEMAN AND HIS SMA Z SINGLE ENG ACFT SHOULD HAVE RPTED HIS POS SOMEWHERE ON HIS DOWNWIND PATTERN, AND MOST DEFINITELY ANSWERED US, WITH AN INFLT ADVISORY AS TO HIS POS, AND WHAT RWY HE WAS INTENDING TO LAND ON. THIS WOULD HAVE GIVEN US AN AREA OF SKY TO SCAN, AND ALLOWED US TO ADJUST OUR AIRSPD TO MATCH HIS SLOWER GND TRACK. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 100437: OVER IBM I STATED MY INTENTIONS TO TURN LEFT DOWNWIND FOR 08 AT 1V5. A SECOND PLANE CALLED IN 10 MI OUT FOR A UNICOM ADVISORY. I OBSERVED AN SMA Y APCHING FROM THE E AT OUR ALT. IT WAS GOING TO PASS BEHIND US ABOUT A MILE. A SECOND PLANE WAS OBSERVED ABOUT 10 MI SE AND WAS NO FACTOR. I CALLED MY TURN TO BASE, LOOKED FOR AND SAW NO TFC. I CALLED MY TURN TO FINAL, LOOKED AND OBSERVED NO TFC. A SINGLE ENG SMA Z LANDED BEHIND US AND TAXIED TO THE TERMINAL AREA.
