Narrative:

It was the last leg of a long day. On our previous stop my boss invited me along with him, so I accepted. Most of the time I stay at the airport and prepare for the next leg. I did not have any charts with me when I left the airport. I checked the WX and it was good VFR. I was somewhat familiar with the area and so felt I would need little if any preparation. I did not review the flight. We departed cable airport at upland, ca. It was dark, which I had not anticipated, making chart review en route a little more challenging. Our destination was san diego. I established contact with ont approach. When received oceanside VOR I started proceeding direct. Ont approach eventually dropped radar service with no handoff but they suggested a san approach frequency and recommended a call in 10 mi. I contacted san approach and requested VFR advisories and a TCA clearance to san diego. I reported my position and was assigned a transponder code. The controller responded with, 'radar contact, you are in a restr area, turn left immediately to 060.' I complied and immediately got out my sectional chart which I had not looked at. Sure enough, I was right in the middle of restr area over pendleton marine base. The singular problem here was a lack of planning. Good VFR WX, night and the somewhat rushed feeling on departure set me up. I learned a lesson about planning, or the lack of it, with very little cost.

ONT APCH EVENTUALLY DROPPED RADAR SVC WITH NO HDOF BUT THEY SUGGESTED A SAN APCH FREQ AND RECOMMENDED A CALL IN 10 MI. I CONTACTED SAN APCH AND REQUESTED VFR ADVISORIES AND A TCA CLRNC TO SAN DIEGO.
