Narrative:
The #2 engine oil filter bypass light illuminated. The appropriate abnormal procedures in the pilots operating manual were followed leading to a precautionary engine shutdown of the #2 engine. Initially got clearance to lower altitude with additional clearance to divert to lambert-stl. Declared an emergency and fire equipment stood by. Appropriate checklists were accomplished, F/a's were briefed and they prepared the passenger for landing. A visibility approach and landing were uneventfully accomplished. Now, for the reason for this report: maintenance has changed to a new engine oil which cleans carbon into the oil. This carbon plugged up the oil filter in the #2 engine during my flight. My emphatic recommendation is to inspect and change the oil filters with higher frequency to preclude recurrence of this type of situation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG INFLT ENGINE SHUTDOWN DUE TO CLOGGED OIL FILTER.
Narrative: THE #2 ENG OIL FILTER BYPASS LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE APPROPRIATE ABNORMAL PROCS IN THE PLTS OPERATING MANUAL WERE FOLLOWED LEADING TO A PRECAUTIONARY ENG SHUTDOWN OF THE #2 ENG. INITIALLY GOT CLRNC TO LOWER ALT WITH ADDITIONAL CLRNC TO DIVERT TO LAMBERT-STL. DECLARED AN EMER AND FIRE EQUIP STOOD BY. APPROPRIATE CHKLISTS WERE ACCOMPLISHED, F/A'S WERE BRIEFED AND THEY PREPARED THE PAX FOR LNDG. A VIS APCH AND LNDG WERE UNEVENTFULLY ACCOMPLISHED. NOW, FOR THE REASON FOR THIS RPT: MAINT HAS CHANGED TO A NEW ENG OIL WHICH CLEANS CARBON INTO THE OIL. THIS CARBON PLUGGED UP THE OIL FILTER IN THE #2 ENG DURING MY FLT. MY EMPHATIC RECOMMENDATION IS TO INSPECT AND CHANGE THE OIL FILTERS WITH HIGHER FREQ TO PRECLUDE RECURRENCE OF THIS TYPE OF SITUATION.
