Narrative:
We were in cruise at FL230. Our identify was ab xxz. There was also an ab xwz on frequency. We took a radio call to descend from FL230 to FL180 and read it back to controller with ab xxz. This was a descent at pilot's discretion. We remained at FL230 and were given a frequency change. About 70 mi out of clt we reported out of FL230 for FL180. The controller acknowledged the descent and a minute or 2 later said the previous controller stated we had accepted a clearance for another aircraft. New controller stated no problem as he had no traffic. As ab xxz we had transmitted to both controllers 3 times we had clearance to FL180 with no correction on any call!

Title: ACR MLG ANSWERED WRONG CALL SIGN WITH SIMILAR A/N AND INCURRED ALT DEVIATION FROM ASSIGNED.
Narrative: WE WERE IN CRUISE AT FL230. OUR IDENT WAS AB XXZ. THERE WAS ALSO AN AB XWZ ON FREQ. WE TOOK A RADIO CALL TO DSND FROM FL230 TO FL180 AND READ IT BACK TO CTLR WITH AB XXZ. THIS WAS A DSCNT AT PLT'S DISCRETION. WE REMAINED AT FL230 AND WERE GIVEN A FREQ CHANGE. ABOUT 70 MI OUT OF CLT WE RPTED OUT OF FL230 FOR FL180. THE CTLR ACKNOWLEDGED THE DSCNT AND A MINUTE OR 2 LATER SAID THE PREVIOUS CTLR STATED WE HAD ACCEPTED A CLRNC FOR ANOTHER ACFT. NEW CTLR STATED NO PROB AS HE HAD NO TFC. AS AB XXZ WE HAD XMITTED TO BOTH CTLRS 3 TIMES WE HAD CLRNC TO FL180 WITH NO CORRECTION ON ANY CALL!
