Narrative:

We were in cruise at FL230. Our identify was ab xxz. There was also an ab xwz on frequency. We took a radio call to descend from FL230 to FL180 and read it back to controller with ab xxz. This was a descent at pilot's discretion. We remained at FL230 and were given a frequency change. About 70 mi out of clt we reported out of FL230 for FL180. The controller acknowledged the descent and a minute or 2 later said the previous controller stated we had accepted a clearance for another aircraft. New controller stated no problem as he had no traffic. As ab xxz we had transmitted to both controllers 3 times we had clearance to FL180 with no correction on any call!
