Narrative:
During descent into san ZLA was vectoring was for traffic. We had been taken slightly north of J2 and west of ipl. We were given a heading of 250 degrees to intercept the localizer. Then we were given a heading of 240 degrees to resume the baret 3 arrival. At that point both pilots had the localizer tuned in, so I retuned my radio to the poggi 043 degree right. I had assumed the 250 degree heading had taken us south of the ipl 258 degree right and that on the 240 degree heading we would resume the arrival by intercepting the poggi 043 degree right. Apparently center wanted us to resume by intercepting the ipl 258 degree right because after about a minute on the 240 degree heading center said we were several mi south and to turn to 290 degrees to intercept arrival (and contact approach control). When we went to approach he turned us back to 240 degree heading to intercept the localizer. I think center should have related our position to us and been more specific as to where in the arrival (specifically) they would like us to intercept the STAR. On my part, I should have been more thorough in determining my exact position after being vectored by center. I should not have assumed the intercept heading was meant for the poggi 043 degree right.

Narrative: DURING DSCNT INTO SAN ZLA WAS VECTORING WAS FOR TFC. WE HAD BEEN TAKEN SLIGHTLY N OF J2 AND W OF IPL. WE WERE GIVEN A HDG OF 250 DEGS TO INTERCEPT THE LOC. THEN WE WERE GIVEN A HDG OF 240 DEGS TO RESUME THE BARET 3 ARR. AT THAT POINT BOTH PLTS HAD THE LOC TUNED IN, SO I RETUNED MY RADIO TO THE POGGI 043 DEG R. I HAD ASSUMED THE 250 DEG HDG HAD TAKEN US S OF THE IPL 258 DEG R AND THAT ON THE 240 DEG HDG WE WOULD RESUME THE ARR BY INTERCEPTING THE POGGI 043 DEG R. APPARENTLY CENTER WANTED US TO RESUME BY INTERCEPTING THE IPL 258 DEG R BECAUSE AFTER ABOUT A MINUTE ON THE 240 DEG HDG CENTER SAID WE WERE SEVERAL MI S AND TO TURN TO 290 DEGS TO INTERCEPT ARR (AND CONTACT APCH CTL). WHEN WE WENT TO APCH HE TURNED US BACK TO 240 DEG HDG TO INTERCEPT THE LOC. I THINK CENTER SHOULD HAVE RELATED OUR POS TO US AND BEEN MORE SPECIFIC AS TO WHERE IN THE ARR (SPECIFICALLY) THEY WOULD LIKE US TO INTERCEPT THE STAR. ON MY PART, I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE THOROUGH IN DETERMINING MY EXACT POS AFTER BEING VECTORED BY CENTER. I SHOULD NOT HAVE ASSUMED THE INTERCEPT HDG WAS MEANT FOR THE POGGI 043 DEG R.
