Narrative:

My first officer and I departed myf in an small transport. Our clearance was to turn left to a heading of 270 degrees and climb to 3000'. Upon contacting departure control the controller called out traffic in our 1 O'clock position. We had 3 targets in sight, one at 10 O'clock, 1 at 12 O'clock, and one at 1 O'clock. We told the controller that we had traffic in sight. After passing these targets the controller cleared us to climb to 4000' and to maintain the 270 degree heading. I reached for the checklist and noticed a single engine small aircraft directly off the nose passing left to right. My first officer noticed the small aircraft at the same time. We both started a climbing left turn to pass over and behind the small aircraft. We were talking to san departure and we were out of approximately 3600'. The traffic was not called out to us. We questioned the controller and told him about the occurrence. He then confirmed traffic northeast of our position approximately 1 mi on a north heading at 3500'.
