Narrative:

I, as first officer, and pilot at the controls landing on runway 4R at jfk airport. Ceiling was 300' overcast and visibility 1/2 mi in snow. After landing, the captain took the controls to taxi and tower instructed us to proceed via taxiway flight attendant and F, to hold short of 4L and remain tower frequency. My attention was diverted inside the cockpit while performing after landing checks. When I again looked outside to monitor our taxi progress, I recognized we had already taxied onto 4L, possibly due in part to runway lights, taxi lights, stop bar lights and runway sign being obscured or covered by snow. At this time the entire crew recognized the error and after crossing 4L I contacted ground control. They instructed us to return to tower control who then asked if he had cleared us to cross. After replying that we hadn't seen the runway, tower instructed us to contact ground. We then continued to our gate.
