Narrative:
While taxiing for takeoff on runway 14, I elected to back-taxi from ddc terminal ramp to the end of 14 runway. After being advised by the airport manager that an medium large transport (same as mine) had taxied off the taxiway on a ferry flight, indicating that the taxiway intersection was to narrow for taxi. While negotiating the 180 degree turn to position the aircraft for takeoff on runway 14, the nosewheel left the pavement of the runway onto the dry ground. Was able to continue the turn back onto the runway with the ground supporting the aircraft. However to avoid any stress on the nosewheel a gentle turn back to the runway resulted in the main gear also left the runway. No aircraft damage was sustained and no airport property was damaged. Have recommended to supervisors that the medium large transport or aircraft of similar size be utilized at ddc as the txwys are too small for safe turns. Supplemental information from acn 107551: based on our recommendation, the company will no longer send medium large transport aircraft to ddc.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACFT WAS UNABLE TO NEGOTIATE A 180 DEGREE TURN ON THE TKOF RWY DUE TO THE TYPE ACFT AND THE WIDTH OF THE RWY.
Narrative: WHILE TAXIING FOR TKOF ON RWY 14, I ELECTED TO BACK-TAXI FROM DDC TERMINAL RAMP TO THE END OF 14 RWY. AFTER BEING ADVISED BY THE ARPT MGR THAT AN MLG (SAME AS MINE) HAD TAXIED OFF THE TXWY ON A FERRY FLT, INDICATING THAT THE TXWY INTXN WAS TO NARROW FOR TAXI. WHILE NEGOTIATING THE 180 DEG TURN TO POS THE ACFT FOR TKOF ON RWY 14, THE NOSEWHEEL LEFT THE PAVEMENT OF THE RWY ONTO THE DRY GND. WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE THE TURN BACK ONTO THE RWY WITH THE GND SUPPORTING THE ACFT. HOWEVER TO AVOID ANY STRESS ON THE NOSEWHEEL A GENTLE TURN BACK TO THE RWY RESULTED IN THE MAIN GEAR ALSO LEFT THE RWY. NO ACFT DAMAGE WAS SUSTAINED AND NO ARPT PROPERTY WAS DAMAGED. HAVE RECOMMENDED TO SUPVRS THAT THE MLG OR ACFT OF SIMILAR SIZE BE UTILIZED AT DDC AS THE TXWYS ARE TOO SMALL FOR SAFE TURNS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 107551: BASED ON OUR RECOMMENDATION, THE COMPANY WILL NO LONGER SEND MLG ACFT TO DDC.
