Lost cabin pressurization; cabin altitude warning [we] performed red block items. Immediately regained cabin pressurization with manual control. [We] descended from FL330; while the first officer read the QRH checklist. [We] stopped at FL240 as first officer had cabin pressure stable with manual control. Title: An MD82's AUTO Cabin Pressure Controller failed at FL330; flight crew declared an emergency and while descending the First Officer stabilized the cabin in Manual Control. After leveling at FL240 the flight diverted to a nearby airport.
