Narrative:
I contacted ATIS and was given a transponder code (no heading, altitude or departure frequency). I requested runway 14 and was cleared to taxi to 14 and hold short. I did as cleared. I did my run-up and pre-takeoff checklist. I then contacted tower and advised that I was ready for departure at 14. I then heard a clearance to turn left to 090 degrees and contact departure on 125.3. I read back the clearance and took off on runway 14. Prior to takeoff I looked in both directions to be sure that there was no traffic (incoming or taking off on runway 5-23). I do this at all airports with intersecting runways. There was no other traffic. I contacted departure and was cleared to maintain at or below 2000'. I did so and read back clearance. Shortly thereafter, approach called and wanted my name and phone #. I asked if there was some problem. He said to give him my name and home phone # and we could talk about it later. I gave him my name and #. I requested he give me a # and I would call him when I got on the ground. When I called, I was told that I had not been cleared for takeoff. He said that I had been cleared to taxi in position and hold. I asked if I could listen to the tape. He said he was too busy and I could not. I called the FAA in atlanta and was referred to winston-salem. I explained what had happened and asked if he could help me to be able to listen to the tape. He said he would make some phone calls. The next day I was called by the tower and they said I could listen to the tapes. He said that there was nothing on the tape about being cleared to taxi in position and hold and that the clearance was for another aircraft. I plan to go to rdu and listen to the tape tomorrow. I have had 2 conflicting stories. I believe that I was cleared for takeoff along with heading and departure frequency. Please call me by phone and I will have more information after hearing the tapes.

Title: GA SMA UNAUTH TKOF FROM RDU.
Narrative: I CONTACTED ATIS AND WAS GIVEN A XPONDER CODE (NO HDG, ALT OR DEP FREQ). I REQUESTED RWY 14 AND WAS CLRED TO TAXI TO 14 AND HOLD SHORT. I DID AS CLRED. I DID MY RUN-UP AND PRE-TKOF CHKLIST. I THEN CONTACTED TWR AND ADVISED THAT I WAS READY FOR DEP AT 14. I THEN HEARD A CLRNC TO TURN LEFT TO 090 DEGS AND CONTACT DEP ON 125.3. I READ BACK THE CLRNC AND TOOK OFF ON RWY 14. PRIOR TO TKOF I LOOKED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS TO BE SURE THAT THERE WAS NO TFC (INCOMING OR TAKING OFF ON RWY 5-23). I DO THIS AT ALL ARPTS WITH INTERSECTING RWYS. THERE WAS NO OTHER TFC. I CONTACTED DEP AND WAS CLRED TO MAINTAIN AT OR BELOW 2000'. I DID SO AND READ BACK CLRNC. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, APCH CALLED AND WANTED MY NAME AND PHONE #. I ASKED IF THERE WAS SOME PROB. HE SAID TO GIVE HIM MY NAME AND HOME PHONE # AND WE COULD TALK ABOUT IT LATER. I GAVE HIM MY NAME AND #. I REQUESTED HE GIVE ME A # AND I WOULD CALL HIM WHEN I GOT ON THE GND. WHEN I CALLED, I WAS TOLD THAT I HAD NOT BEEN CLRED FOR TKOF. HE SAID THAT I HAD BEEN CLRED TO TAXI IN POS AND HOLD. THE NEXT DAY I WAS CALLED BY THE TWR AND THEY SAID I COULD LISTEN TO THE TAPES. HE SAID THAT THERE WAS NOTHING ON THE TAPE ABOUT BEING CLRED TO TAXI IN POS AND HOLD AND THAT THE CLRNC WAS FOR ANOTHER ACFT. I PLAN TO GO TO RDU AND LISTEN TO THE TAPE TOMORROW. I HAVE HAD 2 CONFLICTING STORIES. I BELIEVE THAT I WAS CLRED FOR TKOF ALONG WITH HDG AND DEP FREQ. PLEASE CALL ME BY PHONE AND I WILL HAVE MORE INFO AFTER HEARING THE TAPES.
